Information On Futures Markets

Futures Market

Futures Market and investing in it.

Futures market trading has been an increasingly popular means of generating profits in the investment arena. With the popularity of the Internet and the free-flow of information available there, futures market traders are able to share ideas, compare research methods, and communicate in real time.

In futures market trading, you are not actually purchasing the commodity, but a contract to buy a commodity at a specified price. The contracts typically have relatively short expiration dates, making the futures market a more speculative avenue for investors. Only traders with significant experience should engage in the futures market, where entire investments can be lost in a matter of minutes.

The futures market deals in a number of commodities such as gold and precious metals, sugar, oil, and pork bellies. International currencies including the U.S. dollar, British pound, Japanese yen, and French franc are traded on the futures market. Trading in price contracts for commodities began in 1820 with the East India Company, where futures were traded on sugar. Since that time, the futures market has blossomed into an international billion dollar financial market.

Mercantile exchanges are operating all over the world, in such places as New York, Chicago, and London, where the futures market trading occurs. In the United States alone, it is estimated that in excess of five billion dollars per year is traded in futures.

While no physical commodities typically ever change hands based on the expiration of futures market contracts, enormous financial gains and losses do. If an investor holds a contract up to the expiration date, under certain circumstances, he stands to lose his entire investment. As mentioned, the futures market is not for investing novices. Significant investment experience is stocks, options, as well as other investment vehicles are recommended before launching into the more volatile futures market.
